Unless you are absolutely perfect, you may have a few flaw areas that you want to conceal when you are choosing your prom dress. Perhaps your arms are thick, your have wide shoulders, or you feel that your chest is too small. No matter what you think your flaw may be, the right dress can still make you look beautiful on prom night. Here are a few great ideas to use as you choose a dress that will mask your flaws.

Your Neck
Perhaps you have a short neck that is very thick or you have a thin and long neck. Either way, you may want to make it look a bit different. If your neck is thick and short, then you will want to make it look slimmer and longer. What you need is any deep neckline, such as a sweet heart or a v-neck. Wearing your hair up can help and you should never use shoulder pads or wear choker necklaces. If your neck is thin and long, you’ll want to flatter it. Almost any neckline is fine, and wearing a nice scarf or a choker can really balance out your look.

Your Shoulders
More than likely your shoulders are either wide or they are a bit on the thin side. If you have wider shoulders, you can make them narrower with the right dress. Avoid any shoulder pads and go with tops that are open, such as strapless dresses or halter top dresses. If you have narrow shoulders and you need to make them look a bit bigger, your best option is to get a dress that has some shoulder pads.

Your Chest
You probably feel that your chest is either too large or that they are too small. If you think they are too big, you need to support and shape them with the dress. Avoid a top that is too tight and you may want to avoid strapless dresses. If your chest is small, you can make the chest look fuller with tops that fit tight, or you can use special bras with padding to enhance your shape under the dress.

Your Waist
Maybe you have a long waist, a thick waist, or a short waist. If the waist is long and you have shorter legs, then you want to make your waist look a bit shorter. An empire dress is a wonderful option and you want to avoid any extra trim on the bottom end of the dress. If you have a waste that is thick, you want to make it look slimmer. Go with a waistline that is fitted and a bust that is fitted too. An empire waist can disguise a thick waist too. For a short waist, you want to lengthen the waist. This can be done by wearing drop waist dresses, dresses that have slits to show the legs, or any dress that is fairly tight.

Your Rear
There are many girls that are a bit conscientious about their rears. Maybe it’s too big or too small. If you want to make it look smaller, go with a-line styles, a dress with an empire waist, and make sure that you go with fabrics that are soft as well. For a smaller rear, you’ll want to make it look a bit bigger. An a-line style can help and a dress that is tight at the waist with a flair can increase how big your rear looks.

Your Legs
Of course, you want the dress to flatter your legs as well. You may have thicker legs or thinner legs. For girls that have legs that are thick, you want to make them look longer and leaner. Most skirts will look okay, but you want to avoid slits that are too long. Any slits should be lower than your knee. If your legs look thin and you want to make them look more shapely, go with a long sheath, a straight a-line or even a dress that has a trumpet skirt.

A creation by Ivory Coast designer Anderson D during Dakar Fashion Week, 2010. REUTERS/Finbarr O’Reilly

Hey, the Dress Company, I’m a very strict father with a parenting question. My daughter’s prom is next month, and…

. . . . Sorry to interrupt you, sir, but what kind of school has a prom in August ?

It’s a summer school prom. Anyway, you know how kids behave at those things, and I’m afraid the boys will be trying to get her to do you-know-what. So I’m looking to find a prom dress that will keep her absolutely safe.

. . . . That’s a tall order, but I believe I’ve found a dress so totally freakish that your daughter’s prom experience is guaranteed to scar her for life and require years of therapy.

That’s just what I want! What does it look like?

Hmmmm. Well, I don’t know. Remember, she needs to be INCREDIBLY unattractive.

. . . . Trust me. In this dress she could prance through Death Row talking nasty at the top of her lungs, and she wouldn’t get a second glance. Now let’s talk about some wooden clogs for her to wear with it.

With all of the careful planning that goes into selecting the perfect wedding or prom gown and the special memories that go along with it, many women choose to preserve their prom dress as a keepsake or with the intention of passing it down to another family member. Using a little tender loving care and proper storage techniques will ensure that the gown remains beautiful for years to come.

For better or worse, storing a clean gown is the first step. Within a few weeks of the nuptials or prom, it’s important to have your beautiful prom dress cleaned. The longer stains and soil are left on the dress, the harder it will be to remove them. Make certain you read and follow the directions on the care label as to either wash it or dry clean it. Be careful of trims like sequins and some beads because some cannot be dry cleaned.

If you aren’t certain of what services might be best for cleaning, take the gown to a dry cleaner or a preservation specialist or expert who has been trained in cleaning and preparing gowns for storage. They can identify all the stains and spills, even those you can’t see. If you don’t know any one or can’t find one in the telephone book, you might ask a friend or relative for a referral.

Storing a gown is a lifetime commitment, so make sure you get it right the first time. Do not store your gown in a plastic bag. Plastic can break down over time and release chemicals and fumes that can discolor and destroy the fabric. If you are boxing your gown for storage, be sure to wrap fabrics in acid-free white tissue paper. Bodices or curved areas of a garment should be stuffed with tissue to prevent reasing. If you use an acid-free cardboard box, you’ll need to change the box every three to five years. Cardboard is absorbent, and even acid-free boxes can re-acidify over time. Some companies even sell units, appropriately called wedding dress boxes, which are made specifically for storing these precious gowns. prom dresses

It’s also important to store your gown in a cool, dry place. A damp basement or a hot, musty attic can cause mildew and yellowing of fabric, so you probably want to avoid those areas for storage. You also might want to keep your gown packed away from sunlight and any artificial light. Most light sources can cause degradation and fading. The back of a roomy closet in a spare room or rarely-used closet will make a great home for your prom dress.

You’ve made a vow to honor and cherish a loved one, so why not care for your gown as well. If you are hanging your dress, wrap it in a white sheet, and hang with the inside loops that are connected to sturdy side seams. Never hang it by the fragile shoulder seams that can cause it to either stretch or sag.

Once you have stored your gown properly, you should check it periodically for damage. Stains that weren’t initially apparent can appear at a later date and should be treated immediately. Preserving your gown is important if you want to enjoy and share it for years to come.
