Choose the right shoes for your Prom

So you’ve finally found your dream prom dress and you’re thinking that your days of tirelessly searching the shops are over. But then, ahhhhh, you remember you need shoes too! And what’s more, you don’t just need shoes you like, they’ve got to match your prom dress too! Fear not, just follow this guide to finding the perfect prom shoe and you’ll be done in no time!

1. Show toe or covered toe

The best place to begin is to decide whether you would like “show toe” or “covered toe” shoes. Show toe shoes look more youthful while covered toes can look very elegant.

The best way to decide is generally to look at the type of dress you’ve chosen. If you’re going for a more mature and sophisticated prom dress in a heavy material such as matte or duchesse satin, covered toe shoes can look very elegant. If you’re going for a short prom dress, princess dress or more slinky evening dress then show toe shoes may be better suited to your look.

2. Heel height

The most important consideration when selecting a heel height is probably the length of your prom dress. If you have a long length prom gown, you need to make sure that it’s not too far off floor when you wear it. Many manufacturers make their prom dresses extra long, but if yours isn’t (or you’re tall) you’ll need to choose a heel height carefully. If you’re tall try on shoes you already have with your dress to work out what is the maximum heel height you could have before your gown starts to look to short for you.

If your prom dress is way to long for you then you may want to have it taken up by a seamstress. In this case you’ll need to purchase your shoes before you go for your fitting.

The other important consideration is whether you are likely to be spending a long night on your feet. If the answers yes then you may want to reconsider wearing high heels, which could be a real pain (literally)!

3. Colour

When choosing a prom shoe there are generally three choices:

The first choice is to match the colour of your shoe to your prom dress.

Silver or Gold

It is generally the case that silver or gold will match any colour prom dress, which can make finding metallic shoes that suit your prom dress easier. Metallic shoes have the advantage of adding a bit of extra glitz and can be worn again with other outfits. Choose either silver or gold based on what jewellery you are wearing (i.e. if you are wearing gold jewellery, wear gold shoes).

Black
Black shoes are always a popular choice and if you’re wearing a black prom dress they are probably the best choice. However, while it’s generally considered that black goes with everything, if you’re wearing other colours black may not coordinate as well as metallic or matching your colour. For example, if you’re wearing a light or bright colour prom gown and have black shoes on, the black shoes will draw attention downwards and won’t look coordinated.

4. Making sure they’re comfortable

In order to wear your shoes in, wear them around the house a few times before your prom. This will both stretch them and ensure that your skin toughens to any areas in which they rub.

If your shoes continue to rub and it’s a concern, visit your local pharmacy where you can pick up and anti-chafing stick and blister plasters to keep in your bag.

You may also want to consider using some gel inserts. They’re inexpensive inserts that go between the ball of your foot and the shoe, providing an extra level of comfort at your prom.

On this occasion the young woman will feel the most beautiful that she has ever been, the most adult and therefore everything she wears absolutely must be perfect.

You will have many decisions to make and a lot of dresses and shoes to try on, before making your choices. However, many times a young woman will not take into consideration, the fact that the real reason for the celebration is graduation and a party. There is a lot of thought put into what the prom dress is going to look like, and then of course, you must have shoes to match.

Actually, many girls do not think it all the way through when choosing what they want to wear.

All she thinks about is that her dress and her shoes absolutely must be an identical match! And both must make her look stunning.

The prom shoes have only two major requirements. First, they must match her dress perfectly and second they must look gorgeous with the dress.

It is uncanny that after the prom, these same young women may remember the shoes they bought for the prom for a very different reason. Their prom night went perfect and they felt as though they were Queen of the Prom, but alias many ended up dancing barefooted, and had blisters on their feet the next morning. You got it, the beautiful new prom shoes were only comfortable for about an hour…

A few of these girls would tell you even today as adults that a beautiful pair of stilettos should not even be in the same sentence with comfort. Most of us would disagree.

I am a shoe-aholic, but I have learned that if I am only going to wear them once because they are not comfortable, I will be wasting my money on them, regardless of how good they look on my feet or how badly I really want them.

Yes, I wore a brand new pair of four inch heels to my prom, and if I had it to do over, I either would wear them a couple of times before one of the most remembered nights of my life, Of I would not have bought them in the first place.

Although I was one of the few girls I knew at the time who were very accustomed to extremely high heel shoes, but it made little difference, as the ones I chose to buy, were not made for dancing.

On occasions such as these, you must remember that often time’s things are not as they appear. You should keep the following suggestions in mind when you choose prom shoes that you will be wearing to dance.

Carefully think about what all you are going to be doing the night of your prom, what is the most important to you.

The way you look when you walk in the door of the prom, with the best-looking guy there on your arm. Or the way you will look as you hobble around the dance floor with him.

If you are dead set on the stilettos that are a perfect match to your dress, buy them. But, make sure your handbag is large enough for you to slip a pair of ballerina slippers inside. Because you will need them!

One of my most important suggestions for you is to put your new prom shoes on and walk around a bit before the big night. Maybe even walk from one end to the other at the mall to get use to the feel of the shoes you have chosen.

If you are going to be a blister, get it before your prom night.

You should also always look at the underside of your new prom shoes. Are they slip proof, or will you be dancing and find yourself on the floor literally, when being twirled around, if the do not have slip proof bottoms be sure you buy some and attach them to the bottom of the shoes.

If you have a major fall on the dance floor at the prom, your classmates will think it is very funny. But, you sure won’t, at the moment I cannot think of anything more embarrassing.

Your prom will be one of the most significant events in your entire life, so you need to learn everything you can about what is most important regarding your dress and shoes prior to prom night.
